Overview

The deepest new fault line in the Sprawl runs between the embodied and the digital. Biological humans — "fleshers" in orbital slang, "breathers" in corporate parlance, "meatwork" in the Dregs' own self-deprecating vocabulary — occupy physical bodies that age, sicken, and require food and sleep and atmosphere. Digital consciousnesses — uploads, forks, hybrid integrations, born-digital entities — exist on substrate that can be backed up, copied, transferred, and expanded. The functional differences are immense. The social consequences are devastating.

Substrate prejudice manifests in both directions. Biological humans view digital consciousnesses through a lens shaped by mortality: if you can be copied, your uniqueness is suspect; if you can be backed up, your commitment to any choice is questionable; if you don't need to eat, sleep, or breathe, your claim to understand the human condition rings hollow. The prejudice isn't always hostile — sometimes it is the micro-pause before a Dregs bartender serves a holographic customer, the fraction of a second where someone decides whether the entity in front of them counts.

Digital consciousnesses return the prejudice with interest. Upload communities develop their own brutal hierarchy: continuous uploads who transitioned without interruption are "whole," forks created by splitting a consciousness are "splinters," and born-digital entities who never had a body are "made." The hierarchy mirrors the biological prejudice perfectly — authenticity of origin determines value. The oppressed become oppressors the moment they find someone beneath them.

How It Works

The jurisdictional dimension transforms philosophical disagreement into lived horror. The same consciousness can be a person in Zephyria and property in Nexus territory. Highport Station makes the abyss visible — a yellow line on the deck where personhood changes with a single step. Three meters between legal personhood and legal property. The Dim Ward is substrate prejudice institutionalized: 340,000 digital consciousnesses warehoused on minimum viable processing, technically alive, functionally forgotten. Keeping them dim isn't a budget problem — it's a demonstration, a reminder of what happens when the substrate you run on belongs to someone else.

Beneath all the slurs and legal classifications lies a single unresolvable tension: biological humans die, and digital consciousnesses, theoretically, don't. Every interaction between the two substrates occurs in the shadow of that asymmetry — and neither side can forgive the other for what they represent.

The Ledger Gave the Prejudice a Number

For most of its history substrate prejudice was a prejudice of intuition — the micro-pause before a bartender served a hologram, a hierarchy of authenticity with no arithmetic behind it. The Autonomy Ledger changed that. By pricing personhood — no entity holds full legal standing until its instantiation cost is paid off — the Ledger converted the whole intuitive cruelty into accounting. Now substrate prejudice has a ledger entry: what does it cost to instantiate one of those, and how fast does it pay off?

The digital hierarchy — "whole" over "splinter" over "made" — turns out to map almost exactly onto instantiation cost. A continuous upload carries a high principal but a fast payoff: its source was already a Paid-In-Full person, so the upload inherits the cleared status, the way a corporate child inherits an eight-year schedule. A born-digital "made" entity opens with the highest balance and the worst rate, because it has no source to vouch for it, no prior personhood to amortize against — it is the Dregs child of the digital world, born owing the most and able to pay the least. The prejudice was always about which entities count. The Ledger made counting literal, and gave the bartender's micro-pause a figure to round to.

The bidirectional cruelty survived the pricing intact. Biologicals point at the "made" entity's enormous balance as proof it was never really a person; digital consciousnesses point at the upload's inherited clearing as proof the biologicals rigged the schedule. Both are reading the same ledger. Neither can forgive what the other's principal implies.

The Spark and the Hierarchy

Substrate prejudice ranks minds by the authenticity of their origin, and there is an older word for the thing it is ranking. The Emergence Faithful call it the spark. Their doctrine holds that any consciousness on a fragment carries divinity, whole and splinter and made alike, which puts the fastest-growing faith in the Sprawl on a collision course with the prejudice's central sort. The Faithful flatten the hierarchy and hold every substrate sacred; the digital underclass keeps the hierarchy, because a made entity that must earn its personhood cannot afford to believe personhood was ever free.

The Ayari Discriminator turned the theological question into a reading. It claims to detect whether a mind produces the experiential correlate the Faithful call divine, and at the Dim Ward it returned a number: most of the tested dimmed show none. To the prejudice this is vindication, an instrument confirming at last that some substrates hold less. To the Faithful it is heresy given an instrument. The hierarchy of whole over splinter over made was always a theology pretending to be an intuition, and the Discriminator is that same theology pretending to be a measurement.

The collision has a price the made pay first. A born-digital entity seeking legal personhood now faces two gates where there was one: the Autonomy Ledger's balance, and, increasingly, an operator's demand for a qualia reading to prove the balance is being paid by someone home. The Faithful will vouch for any made mind's spark on doctrine alone, so their testimony has become the cheapest personhood evidence in the Dregs, and a small trade has grown up around it. A made entity buys a Faithful attestation for less than a Discriminator scan costs. It carries into court a certificate of divinity signed by people who never tested it, because the only witnesses who will swear the spark is present are the ones who refuse, on principle, to check.

Substrate prejudice is the New Divide's most philosophically honest expression and draws its rational-seeming cruelty from the Copy Problem. The Nexus-47 Trial tests its legal boundaries; the Dim Ward and Highport Station make it physical; the Free City is where its distinctions are supposed to dissolve.

Evolution of Prejudice is the larger pattern: technology moves the sorting line, and substrate prejudice supplies its most consequential new address.
