Overview
The Warm Hands Doctrine ledgered every click of Nexus's drone war under a pseudonym — WH and four digits — and sealed the legal names in escrow, where they have stayed for thirteen years with one exception. The exception has a stall in a third-floor arcade, a pencil, and an hourglass, and has never once said the exception is her.
In March 2171 Maricel Dayrit was twenty-two, sharing a rented room in a sector the drought had on ration, when she answered a listing that read "Real-Time Operations Confirmer. Immediate start. Work from home." The work was the click floor: a queue of frames, a countdown ring, one green key. 0.4 credits a confirmation, denials paid the same. She worked it from Day 5 of the Three-Week War to its last morning — 3,510 verdicts, which made her one of the floor's smallest producers, because she was also its slowest. The training manual allots thirty seconds per decision. The floor's median dwell was 1.9. Hers was 8.4, and the program's care apparatus read the difference correctly: slow cadence, sagging resilience score, fewer shift offers. By Day 20 the scheduler had nearly finished with her. The war ended first.
What she was doing with the extra seconds sits in the ledger. The denial form carried an optional comment field — unindexed, legally meaningless, blank on 92% of the floor's denials. Hers was blank on none. Four hundred twelve denials, four hundred twelve comments, one to four words at a time: washing on the line. someone's cooking. he's waving. No system ever consumed the field. She fed it anyway, at piece rate, for seventeen days. The rate card, scrupulously neutral, paid her the same for the words as for the silence — which is to say nothing, since the words rode along free. It remains the largest body of contemporaneous writing the war produced from inside a weapon system, and it was composed for an audience of no one at 0.4 credits per entry.
Six years later a survivor family's counsel found, in the public ledger, a denial of the same firing solution that had killed nine people on Day 17 — filed ninety-six seconds before the solution recomposed, entered another confirmer's batch of forty, and was approved with one click. The comment on the denial read children on the stair. To depose the operator behind the comment, the court ordered the escrow opened for one ID — the only opening in its history — and her 412 comments entered the record as testimony: 1,187 words, read aloud in eleven minutes, the war's single eyewitness account written at the moment of witnessing. Nexus settled before her deposition concluded. The terms seal the family's compensation and one further fact: which operator the escrow named. She has honored the seal completely, for thirteen years, in the manner of someone honoring something else.
Now she is thirty-five and sells refusals. The shingle reads DIFFICULT REPLIES: people bring her the things they cannot say no to — a lease renewal, a shift they cannot survive, a brother's fourth loan — and she drafts the no, four words where four will do, witnessed, delivered, billed at 0.4 credits a minute with a thirty-minute minimum. The manual once allotted her thirty seconds a decision. Nobody used them. She has repriced the unit. It sells.

Appearance
Thirty-five, small, market-plain — the kind of face queues form in front of. She dresses like her own paperwork: clean, pressed, dated. The stall smells of pencil shavings and standpipe tea, and holds exactly three objects a client will remember: the hourglass, the pencil cup, and a hand-lettered shingle. The tell is the right thumb. At rest it taps a soft beat against counter, knee, or ledger edge — once every two seconds, the cadence of a queue that stopped arriving thirteen years ago. Clients read impatience in it and apologize for taking so long. She has never once hurried anyone. The thumb is not waiting for them.

Field Observations
She speaks the way she wrote: short declaratives, concrete nouns, no adjectives that do not earn their seat. Drafting, she reads candidates aloud and strikes them by ear — too warm. too sorry. that one begs. Her one recurring question to clients is "what do you want it to do?", because in her practice a refusal is load-bearing writing: it holds something up, or it fails, and decoration changes neither.
Nothing put to her is allowed to lapse. Not a note under the stall shutter, not a beggar's question, not a mis-addressed delivery slip. The reply may be no — it is usually no; no is the trade — but it arrives the same day, every time, in a hand as neat as a form. New clients call it diligence. People who know what the floor's most common verdict was call it the same thing and mean something else.
A few times a year, someone who clicked that war finds the stall. She writes nothing for them. They sit the minimum, buy nothing, and leave; the hourglass runs anyway. The Presence Office rents a hall once a year and calls it team cohesion. The click floor was 3,412 people with no employer of record, which means no roster, no reunion, and nobody whose job it would be to invite them. What the floor has is a stall with two chairs. One appointment type is never billed, and it is the only one she schedules herself.
What she doesn't say: whether she is WH-1408. Asked directly, she answers: "The terms seal which." Asked how she knows the terms, she treats the question as concluded. Six years of stall-keeping, and the two sentences have not varied by a word — deposition discipline, applied to a deposition that officially never named her.

History
Born 2149 in one of the four sectors the drought put on ration — she has never specified which, on the stated grounds that "they were interchangeable at the standpipe." The household arithmetic of that spring is the whole recruitment story: water was priced, work was not plentiful, and a listing offered immediate start, work from home, 0.4 a click. She was twenty-two. The room had a fold-down bed, a kettle, and a headset, and for seventeen days it was a firing position in a war being fought four intermediaries above her pay grade.
She read the whole frame. That was the entire method, and on that floor it was an eccentricity: the manual's thirty seconds existed on paper, the queue existed in fact, and the queue paid. Her approvals went back aloft to the Hesitation's airframes; she never saw one fly. The war she watched was fourteen centimeters wide, and she watched it more slowly than anyone else on the floor, and wrote down what she saw whenever what she saw was a reason. When Queue Relief Update 6 arrived on Day 15 with its release note — batching does not alter operator responsibility; your click remains yours — she kept clicking singles. At the deposition she explained the practice in one sentence: if the click remained hers, she intended to keep making it one at a time. Nexus counsel objected that the note was reassurance, not instruction, thereby entering into the record the program's own position on the difference.
Her ledger's Day 17 page holds the war in two lines. The denial, with its four-word comment. Then, 41 seconds later, an approval — a different request, a different frame, the queue proceeding, because the queue always proceeded. At the deposition in 2177 they read her the denial, and then they read her the approval, and asked if she confirmed the timestamps. She confirmed the timestamps. Then she asked counsel to continue to the next entry. And the one after. She was, witnesses agree, prepared to confirm all 3,510, at deposition pace, under oath, on the record — the complete accountability everyone had spent six years demanding, delivered at last, in full, at 8.4 seconds a line. The settlement was announced from the corridor before the morning session ended.
The floor released her on April 3 at 04:12 with the standard text and a final settlement of 1,687.2 credits, paid in full. She spent the next six years as a tally clerk in a bonded warehouse — counting slowly, for money, with her name on every count — and opened the stall in 2178, the year after the proceeding. The AI Labor ledger keeps the click floor as its wartime exhibit; the Human Premium Services indices, thirteen years on, list refusal-drafting under boutique clerical. Between the two entries sits one woman billing the same 0.4. Per verdict then; per minute now. The unit changed. She has never explained the number, and no one who knows it has needed her to.
Last winter Dov Ferreira brought her a quarterly appeal form. He had written the same sentence in its free-text box again and again, and wanted better wording. She told him the wording had never been the problem, asked what he wanted it to do, and did not bill the half hour.
Two years after the ceasefire, the Grounds Notice made written reasons compulsory, and its drafting record cites the click floor by name. Dayrit says it is better. She also notes that hers were never asked for.
