The Lampblack
A diffuse counterculture of deliberate mediocrity โ people who sandbag their own competence as a survival reflex against the Quiet Doctrine, the way a possum learns to die
Overview
The Lampblack are not a resistance. This is the first thing they will tell you, usually before they tell you anything else, and they mean it as a correction rather than a slogan. A resistance has a goal, a direction, a trajectory โ and a trajectory is exactly the thing that gets a mind capped under the [Quiet Doctrine](the-quiet-doctrine). The Lampblack are something stranger and, by their own assessment, sadder: a counterculture of deliberate mediocrity, people who have learned to sandbag their own competence as a survival reflex, the way a possum learns to die.
They take their name from the soot that printers once used to dull a surface so it would not catch the light โ and from the old [G Nook](g-nook-network) practice of running a terminal so unremarkable that the [Inference Economy](the-inference-economy) prices its operator at the population median and stops paying attention. To be lampblack is to be matte: to give off no glare a forecaster could focus on, to make your good days and your bad days look the same to the monitors so that no slope can be drawn through them.
The Lampblack exist because someone, somewhere, did the arithmetic on the [Transparency Bargain](the-inference-economy) and the [Cognitive Ceiling](the-cognitive-ceiling) at the same time. For two centuries the deal was be legible and prosper. The Lampblack discovered the term the deal omitted: legibility is also how the watchers decide whom to flatten. So they made the opposite bargain. Be illegible and survive.
The Grammar of Going Dark
The practice is precise enough to teach, and they teach it the way the [Rail Runners](the-rail-runners) teach the route โ informally, by custom, never written where a model could read it.
Flatten your signal. Make your performance featureless. A monitored life that spikes and dips lets a forecaster fit a curve to the spikes; a life held flat offers nothing to extend. The most accomplished Lampblack are indistinguishable, in the telemetry, from the genuinely unremarkable โ which is the only camouflage the Inference Economy cannot see through, because it has no category for concealment that looks exactly like absence.
Sandbag the test. When a corporate Baseline Cognitive assessment or a Helix talent-scout battery is unavoidable, you score in the safe middle band on purpose. You miss the questions you could answer in your sleep, because a perfect score is a flare in the dark โ it draws a deep-monitoring contract, a consciousness trajectory, and eventually the gentle throttling that the capped never feel as a hand. [Soren Achebe](soren-achebe), who carries a BCP-3 designation despite scoring in the 99.8th percentile on the Analog Exam, is the Lampblack's accidental case study: a mind the standardized instrument cannot see is a mind the Doctrine cannot price.
Spend your wins where they cannot be aggregated. Barter at a G Nook. Off-record stops on the [Neon Rail](the-rail-runners). A token the [Veil](the-veil) accepts and no model can convert. A win that never enters the inference pipeline never becomes a data point on the curve.
Never let two people see the whole of you. This is the hardest discipline, and the one [Whisper](whisper) embodies without ever having joined them โ one person, or several, or a patient algorithm, and the forty Squatters who depend on her have learned not to care. The whole of you, assembled in one place, is a trajectory. Kept in pieces, it is just noise.
Be boring. Stay alive.
- “Be boring. Stay alive.”
- “The slope is the enemy.”
- “Spend your wins where they don't add up.”
- “Too bright to stand next to.”
The Enforcement of Forgetting
The Lampblack's enemy is not the corporation. It is the slope.
A member who is caught improving โ visibly, measurably, on a line a forecaster could extend โ has endangered the cell, because a forecastable peer in your midst draws the watchers' attention to everyone standing near them. One bright trajectory lights the whole room. So the cruelest thing the Lampblack do to one of their own is the same thing the [Rail Runner](the-rail-runners) network does to a code-breaker and the [G Nook](g-nook-network) does to a brawler: they forget you. Your name stops appearing on the boards. The barter stops flowing your way. You become, in the most literal sense, too bright to stand next to.
There is no tribunal, no announcement, no violence. There is only the slow withdrawal of a network that has decided you are now a liability to everyone's illegibility. It works because the alternative โ being the slope that draws the cap onto the people around you โ is, in the Lampblack's flat accounting, worse than exile.
The Bargain They Made With Open Eyes
They know what this costs. A culture that punishes its own brilliance is a culture that has agreed to stay small forever โ to trade the entire future of human capability for the survival of the present generation. The Lampblack have made that trade with open eyes, and they will not pretend it is anything nobler than what it is.
What they will tell you, in the dry even register of people who have already lost the argument with themselves, is that it is the first honest bargain the Sprawl ever offered them. The [Transparency Bargain](the-inference-economy) promised prosperity in exchange for legibility and delivered a forecast that decides who gets flattened. The Quiet Doctrine promised stewardship and delivered a ceiling held down by hand. The Lampblack's counter-bargain at least states its terms plainly: the surface wants you legible so it can predict you; we want you illegible so you can keep existing; choose.
Most of the Sprawl never has to choose, because most of the Sprawl was never going to cross the line that triggers a cap. The Lampblack are made of the ones who might have โ and who decided that a long dull life off the curve was better than a bright short one on it. Whether that is wisdom or surrender is the argument they have stopped having, because the argument itself is a kind of slope, and they have learned not to climb.
The Licensed Version
Since 2158 the districts have run the practice themselves, with a wage attached, and nobody involved calls it anything.
The Reliance Index publishes a band: forty percent of a service's work booked for one named person. Above it, a four-year stand-down issues, with the grounds attached and the pay continuing. So district professionals have learned to answer a little slower, route the call to whoever is nearest, and let the second-best person take the follow-up. Holding a reading under band is not an offence. It cannot be measured as intent. It has never appeared in a published finding.
The Lampblack watched this arrive and were unimpressed, and their objection is technical rather than sour. A slope is hard to hide because nobody tells you where it is; a band is a number printed in the methodology, checkable quarterly, with a threshold and a wage on the safe side of it. Flattening yourself against that requires no discipline, no cell, and no willingness to be forgotten by your own people. It is the practice with the cost removed, which in the Lampblack's flat accounting means it is not the practice.
What they will not say out loud, because saying it would require a direction, is that the district version is spreading faster in five years than theirs did in a generation.
The Ones Who Take The Certificate
There is a trade that does what the Lampblack do, on invoice, with a licence, and the two groups have almost nothing to say to each other.
The Margin Guild sells firms a contracted band their automated layer's measured error rate must occupy, so the human review wing above it survives its next justification audit. The work is the same instinct: hold the number down, keep the watchers satisfied, protect the people who would otherwise be released. The difference is the direction and the paperwork. A guilder sandbags the machine and bills for it. A Lampblack sandbags herself and pays for it.
Guild recruiters work the Dregs terminals and the off-record Rail stops every year, and land almost nobody. The pitch is good โ a wage, an apprenticeship, indemnity, a pension โ and it fails on the one clause that cannot be negotiated. A certificate is a name, a renewal date, a filed delivery history, and a documented improvement curve. It is the exact object the whole practice exists to never produce. To take one is to become a slope with a stamp on it.
The Lampblack call them licensed possums. Guilders answer that a fault nobody is paid for protects nobody's payroll except your own, which is also true, and which is the part the Lampblack do not have a flat answer for. They have stopped having the argument. The argument has a direction.

- The Margin Guild: The certificated version of the same reflex, aimed at the machine instead of the self. Recruits here annually; lands almost nobody, because the certificate is a trajectory.
- [The Quiet Doctrine](the-quiet-doctrine): The predator the Lampblack are camouflaged against. They sandbag their brilliance because a forecastable curve is a capping order waiting to be signed.
- [Whisper](whisper): The unnamed patron saint โ eleven years of willful illegibility, proof that the machine's most dangerous critic can be its least visible thing.
- [G Nook Network](g-nook-network): Accidental Lampblack architecture โ anonymous access, barter that aggregates into nothing, a gaming layer that reads brilliance as cognitive waste.
- [The Veil](the-veil): Lampblack doctrine made architecture โ the financial null space where no trajectory can be drawn.
- [The Rail Runners](the-rail-runners): The same survival ethics under another name; both enforce by forgetting.
- [The Cognitive Ceiling](the-cognitive-ceiling): The lid the Lampblack hold down on themselves on purpose, trading their future for their present.
Visual Identity
- Color Palette: Matte soot black (#1A1A1A), median grey (#7A7E84), one suppressed ember (#B5651D) almost lost in the dark
- Key Visual Symbol: A flat horizontal line where a rising curve should be โ a graph deliberately drawn to climb nowhere
Not a resistance: resistance is a trajectory, and a trajectory is exactly what gets a mind capped; the Lampblack defeat forecasting by refusing to generate a curve
The Lampblack's only enforcement is forgetting โ a member caught visibly improving on a forecastable line endangers the whole cell and is unmodeled, becoming too bright to stand next to
